What’s Happening with India’s Shrimp Farmers – June 2025

Introduction:

Shrimp farmers in India are facing big problems. The cost of everything they need like feed, electricity, and labour has gone up. At the same time, people abroad are not buying as much shrimp as before. Now, there is talk of a new tax (called a tariff) on Indian shrimp going to the U.S., which is their biggest buyer. If this tax comes, it will make Indian shrimp more expensive in the U.S., and farmers could lose their main market.

What’s Changed and What It Means

1. Farmers Are Earning Less

Before:
Farmers were earning enough to get by, even if it was not a lot.

Now:
Many farmers are earning much less than before. Some are making less than ₹16,000 a month, when they used to make around ₹28,000. Costs have gone up, but prices for shrimp have gone down.

3. Government and Industry Are Trying to Help

Before:
Farmers got little help from the government.

Now:
Farmers are asking the government to help lower costs and find new buyers. Some states are giving discounts on electricity for shrimp farms, and they want the government to make deals with Europe and other countries to sell more shrimp there.

2. New Taxes Are Coming

Before:
The U.S. bought a lot of Indian shrimp, and there weren’t big taxes on it.

Now:
The U.S. is thinking of adding a big new tax (26%) on Indian shrimp. This could make Indian shrimp too expensive for U.S. buyers. Right now, the tax is lower (10%), but it could go up soon.

4. Cold Storage of Shrimp

Before:
Most shrimp was sold to the U.S.

Now:
Expanding to new markets requires better cold storage and transport to keep shrimp fresh, as maintaining quality throughout the supply chain remains a key challenge for farmers.
